12 sizes of Quarter Square Triangles

There are 12 sizes in the Quarter Square Triangles 00B shape collection. Several other sizes are available as shown in the Index of Shapes. As usual, Inklingo shapes are named with the finished size.

I do the math and measuring. You sew!

Half Square Triangle (HST) and Quarter Square Triangle (QST)

QST = Quarter Square Triangle

Quarter Square Triangles (QST) have straight grain on the long side. Half Square Triangles (HST) have straight grain on the two short sides.

  • overview of traditional, pre-Inklingo QST methods
  • a choice of layouts to use fabric efficiently (see the Triangle Tips PDF, page 7)
  • makes common sizes of Hourglass, Ohio Star, and many other designs
  • includes instructions for methods that require minimal printing
  • all the benefits of sewing with triangle paper, but no paper to pick off
  • precision corners and matching marks for great results
  • perfect for fussy cutting
  • ideal for scrap quilts and some sizes fit on Jelly Rolls (2.5-inch strips)
  • use with any pattern

Some of these sizes were on the Inklingo #2 CD (2006, sold out long ago) but without the two optional layouts for each size, suggested custom page sizes, and improved bookmark navigation.

About the sizes

All Inklingo shapes are named with the finished size (minus the seam allowances).

Most patterns list the finished size of the shapes but you can usually tell the size by looking at adjoining squares and other shapes without doing the math.

This is the shape collection you need if a pattern requires you to cut 4 triangles from squares which are cut from strips that are 1.75 to 4.25 inches wide. With traditional methods, designers add 1.25 (which is only an approximation) to get the width of the strip/squares, so in some patterns:

  • Cut 0.5-inch QST from 1.75-inch squares
  • Cut 2-inch QST from 3.25-inch squares
  • Cut 3-inch QST from 4.25-inch squares
