When I was traveling to teach the most common questions were about pressing, so I focus on that in the lesson.

Description

Jane Austen’s Writing Table has fascinated her fans for 200 years.

Jane Austen's Writing Table

Jane Austen wrote or revised all of her novels at a small, twelve-sided table in the dining parlor at Chawton Cottage in Hampshire, near Winchester.

For this lesson, I designed three little quilts that are the same size and shape as her writing table. They are great settings for six or twelve diamonds from my books, Quilted Diamonds: Jane Austen, Jane Stickle & Friends, and Quilted Diamonds 2: more Austen-tatious diamonds to hand piece.

She wrote with a quill or a pencil

Jane Austen’s Writing Table Quilts DVD

Part 1 – Advantages of Hand Piecing, with detailed, close-up video of stitching (30 minutes).
Part 2 – Pressing & Trimming, plus settings, and suggested quilting designs (30 minutes).

On the CD
50 pages to print, including PDF files with all of the templates required for each of the three Writing Table Quilts, to print on paper or freezer paper.

I watched this DVD for the first time in years and realized that, even though the hand piecing lesson is pre-Inklingo and made for Quilted Diamonds, it is a perfect introduction to hand piecing for quilters who have not hand pieced before because they thought the preparation was too tedious. The close-up stitching and pressing are both done on a diamond that is very similar to LeMoyne Star in the free Inklingo collection. This CD/DVD set is an unbelievable value while the sale lasts.

There are 6 new basket designs that are not in the QD books.

In short, she could not sleep till she had examined it. (NA Ch 21)

“She paused a moment in breathless wonder. …To retire to bed, however, unsatisfied on such a point, would be vain, since sleep must be impossible with the consciousness of . . . “

Jane Austen Replica?

The diamonds are inspired by the Jane Austen coverlet but are a different size. For a pattern for a replica quilt, please see the Inklingo pages.

Bonus Diamond Designs on the CD

You can never have too many friends or too many diamonds, so there are six bonus diamonds on the CD too. The diamonds were designed for the 5th birthday of an online group in February 2005.

Tilde Binger designed six hexagons and I designed six basket diamonds to celebrate the online freindships made possible by the list. Tilde and I burned the patterns on blank CDs sent to us by online freinds.

I stitched those 5th Birthday diamonds again in pink, green, and white and set them together in one of the Writing Table Quilts. Tilde in Denmark sewed some of the diamonds for a beautiful hexagon quilt that she gave to me.

Instead of using quotations from Jane Austen, Tilde and I named each of the bonus diamonds with a quotation from Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding, just for fun. Bridget Jones’s Diary is a take-off from Pride and Prejudice that Tilde and I both find hilarious. The book is better than the movie—as is usually the case! What would Jane Austen think?

“It was but an effusion of lively spirits.” (Jane Austen, Emma, Chapter 24)

Check out Tilde’s Tiny Totes pattern too. Enjoy!

My Quilted Diamonds books were inspired by the Jane Stickle Quilt (1863), which is the subject of the book Dear Jane™ by Brenda Papadakis, and by the Jane Austen Quilt (1812).

If you have Electric Quilt software (EQ4 or newer), you may want to add the optional CDs of patterns, at $10.00 each, so you can print the QD patterns on freezer paper, instead of tracing.

The diamonds are inspired by the Jane Austen coverlet but are a different size. For a pattern for a replica of Jane Austen’s quilt, please see my Jane Austen Patchwork Mystery book and the Main Jane Austen Page.

Another awesome instructional video from Linda Franz (Quilted Diamonds 2 has the other)! If you want to learn how to or improve your hand piecing skills, I don’t believe there is a better teacher available. The information ranges from managing the pieces of a block to hand piecing, and those important pressing tips. I re-watch my videos from Linda about every 6 months as I still am able to learn something that tweaks my skills.

I bought this DVD shortly after purchasing my first Inklingo collections never having hand pieced before. Linda’s explanations and demonstrations are invaluable. I am now happily piecing many different shapes together by hand.
