Description
Jane Austen Patchwork Mystery was published in 2009 and is still the first and only accurate pattern for the quilt. It includes everything you need to make a replica of the famous patchwork by hand or by machine.
Postage is exactly what I pay without a handling fee. I can often fit two or three different books in one flat-rate Priority envelope to make maximum use of postage. Mailed from Niagara Falls NY.
If you are like me, you find everything about Jane Austen endlessly fascinating.
You can make a replica of the Jane Austen coverlet with just this book, but it is far easier with the Jane Austen Patchwork shape collection (download), so you can print the shapes on fabric with Inklingo.
The shape and size of the diamonds and sashing are tricky for modern quilters. The few patterns which appeared over the years simplified the numbers to avoid measuring in eighths and sixteenths of an inch or cutting odd angles. That added another layer of confusion. There was no way to reconcile the sizes and angles in the various sources.
Some of the diamonds in the original were fussy cut and you can fussy cut with Inklingo (2 methods).

Jane Austen Patchwork Mystery was made possible with the gracious assistance (and detective work) of
- Mr. Tom Carpenter, Trustee of the Jane Austen Memorial Trust
- Louise West, of Jane Austen’s House in Chawton
- Sarah Howard, Hampshire County Council Museums
There is a simplified border on the small quilt on the back cover of Jane Austen Patchwork Mystery. I pieced this quilt top by machine except for the small diamonds for the inner border.
Reasons to buy BOTH this book and the downloadable PDF:
- The illustrations in the book are beautifully printed for you
- The book is a lovely keepsake to save with your quilt
- The book includes a pattern for a smaller version
- The book includes more information about Jane Austen
- The book includes instructions for strip piecing
- The book includes more about the mysteries concerning the patchwork
- It is easier to make the quilt with the Inklingo shape collection than with the book alone
I first saw the patchwork coverlet in Jane Austen’s bedroom at the house in Chawton before I was a quilter, and it has fascinated me ever since. It is the inspiration for five of my books: Quilted Diamonds, Quilted Diamonds 2, Jane Austen’s Writing Table Quilts, Jane Austen Patchwork (downloadable pattern), and Jane Austen Patchwork Mystery.

I bought this book to make my own version of this fabulous coverlet. It is wonderful that it has the history and interesting facts but such clear instructions make this less daunting to actually sew

What a beautiful book this is! I love Jane Austen and it was great to read about this Patchwork. No wonder it’s been impossible to do an accurate reproduction of this piece until now–it certainly has odd sizes and angles to it. How interesting the details of the sashing. And what an accomplishment the border diamonds are! Never appreciated those details until this book.

A fabulous book with some absolutely gorgeous shots of the original Jane Austen quilt as well as information to assist one in making a reproduction.
