Upgrade Your Hexagons

Quilters and other designers have loved hexagons for centuries and bees have loved them for millions of years. Now you can upgrade your hexagon quilt designs.

It’s no wonder that quilters and other designers (and bees) love hexagon quilt designs, a perfect tessellation, an intriguing design.

Hexagon designs have been popular since Roman times. Today, hexagon quilts are a favorite for traditional and modern quilters.

Upgrade your Hexagons with Inklingo

Printing hexagons on fabric with an Inkjet printer makes incredibly dramatic improvements over traditional methods of sewing them—in at least 6 ways. Monkey says that’s one for each side.

I chose hexagons for the very first Inklingo shape collection in 2006 because the impact was so overwhelming.

1. Upgrade your hexagons to be more precise.

The printed lines with precision corners make sewing hexagons a breeze. It is easier to get absolute accuracy this way.

I marked the sewing lines and seam endings manually for Quilted Diamonds designs and got great results. Of course, printing is much faster and effortlessly accurate.

By the way, when shapes are not available from Inklingo (yet), I still use the freezer paper template method in Quilted Diamonds (2002) and Quilted Diamonds 2 with DVD (2004). I’m very proud of these two books and have kept them in print. (Shop here.)

2. Upgrade your hexagon quilt design to finish faster.

Some quilters automatically associate hexagons with English Paper Piecing (EPP) but Inklingo gives you more choices.

EPP is slooooow. Every other method is faster and more accurate especially when the cutting and sewing lines are printed on the fabric.

You can sew hexagons by hand (portable) or by machine (faster for some sizes) or a combination of both. Hand + Machine = Hybrid.

3. Upgrade your hexagon quilt design to be prettier, front and back!

Inklingo makes it easier to make unusual and beautiful hexagon quilt designs and your quilt top will even be prettier from the back. The method of pressing above is illustrated in the Hexagon Quilt Design Book (PDF to download, 70 pages).

Follow any pattern or use the time you save to create exciting settings and color combinations. There are thousands of hexagon quilt designs on Pinterest to inspire you.

The half and quarter shapes in each shape collection are great for pieced hexagons, like Candied Hexagons or VariHex or Millefiore Quilts, or 300 Pieced Hexagon Designs (video).

4. Upgrade your hexagons to be safer to cut.

This is an important upgrade compared to acrylic templates.

With the lines printed on the fabric, you can use a rotary cutter or scissors. This is important for quilters who need to cut with scissors because of a disability or to make it portable.

Just cut on a line!

Cutting on a line is safer. We place the rotary blade before we position the straight edge (no measuring), so the blade is less likely to hop the edge. It is also easier to reposition the fabric to get a safe cutting angle. We all know someone who nicked a finger by cutting in an unsafe direction.

You can even cut several layers at a time, with or without lines on every hexagon!

5. Upgrade your hexagon quilt design to be unique.

I like to add fussy cutting. I demonstrated TWO methods of fussy cutting with Inklingo when I was on The Quilt Show with Alex Anderson and Ricky Tims.

I wanted to try to summarize how Inklingo allows you to Upgrade your Hexagons in 6 ways but it wasn’t easy. There are soooo many ways that Inklingo allows you to upgrade your hexagons—it could have been 12!

When you buy a product from Linda, you get so much more than what you thought you were purchasing. I just ordered the Hexagon Quilt Design book during a free period and can’t believe the information I am learning from this free book. She gives us so much more than just designs with a design book. She gives us so much more than just templates with a shape collection. She gives you a wealth of information that will give the long-time quilter or newbie so much information about design or material needed or anything you could possibly want to know (or didn’t know you would want to know). The information is always presented in such a beautifully visual presentation and is such a joy as she shares her wealth of knowledge for so little cost. She really is the best friend for quilters as you feel she is right there encouraging you.

I can’t begin to describe how fantastic Linda’s e-books are. I spent last nite pouring over the 300 Pieced Hexagons and the Hexagon QUilt Design e-book. FANTASTIC! I am a longtime quilter and am familiar with the great “textbooks” of the Masters: Ginny Beyer’s Quilt Piecing by Hand, Harriet Hargrave’s Heirloom Machine Quilting, and Sally Collin’s great treatises on Mastering Precision Piecing. Linda’s books are in a league with these without doubt. Great illustrations, simple language, and very, VERY thorough. Everything you want to know about working with, or designing quilts with the hexagon shape‚Äîand more! I have several great ideas on paper already.

This book not only offers many designs, it is very well written. Everything is explained so well with many graphics. Instructions are given for every step of the process. No special rulers are needed which saves money and space.

I am very excited to try Inklingo once all our stuff arrives at our new home. I’ve read through all the instructions and it sounds like a great product. There are two reasons I didn’t give it 5 stars: 1)I haven’t got to actually print and sew the shapes since we moved. 2)I find the arguments against English paper piecing to be condescending. If that works for someone and they like it why make them feel stupid?

I love hexagons and this book was so a pleasure to sit down and read and more ideas than you can imagine pop in my head. I really like Inklingo and have the first 3 collections. I had a quick project the other day and debated about using Inklingo or another, much slower method. I did not need a lot only 38 for pin cushion. I decided on Inklingo and had a variety printed out and ready to go in much, much less time than another method and sewing together was a breeze and accurate and finish is much more appealing to me than the whip stitch method. Love the ease and whole finshed work. Book is put together in such a way that information is great and eye candy and ideas abound. Lois
