On-Point Basket Quilt

1. Many Design Possibilities

When I set baskets on point like this, I also use the On-Point shape collection to print the squares and the triangles for the corners (HST) and edges (QST).

2. Simple to Decide How Much Fabric

The diagrams for every shape make it simple to shop your stash for scraps or get the latest fabric from the quilt shop for a modern quilt.

3. Seven Combo Layouts

Inklingo quilters love combo layouts. When one fabric is used for several shapes, you can print them all on one sheet of fabric. That often saves fabric and saves time, so you can start sewing sooner.

4. Easy to Cut

Printing the shapes on fabric makes cutting easier and more accurate than using templates.

Use scissors or a rotary cutter. Just cut on the lines. No measuring. No templates! No expensive machines or tools—and there are perfect stitching lines and matching marks printed on every piece!

3 sizes of Basket Quilt Blocks

5. A Choice of Sizes

I almost did not do the 3-inch size but the baskets are so cute and so much fun to sew that it has been the most popular size so far.

The 4.5 and 6-inch baskets can look wonderful with any other 4.5 and 6-inch blocks like stars, log cabin, and others.

7. NEW Back-basting tutorial on QuiltingHub

Basket quilt blocks can be used in many ways but some quilters hesitate because of the handles.

Inklingo gives you a choice—appliqué OR pieced handles on your basket quilt blocks.

Click for a larger view of the slideshow for pieced basket handles.

Even when I machine piece the rest of the basket, I usually hand piece the handles, but it is possible to sew the hand on the 6-inch Basket by machine.

I think you will want to try the pieced option too—even if you normally prefer appliqué.

  • Easier than appliqué for some quilters.
  • Simple preparation.
  • Curves that are easy to cut and easy to sew. (Rotary cut or scissors cut)
  • Design options include having a different fabric under the handle,
so the basket can be full of flowers—or something else!

Printing the shapes on fabric gives us more flexibility and better results.

Print the handle outline on the back of the fabric for appliqué OR print 3 shapes on the fabric to piece the handle.

There is more info about hand piecing curves in an article on the blog.
