Half Square Triangles (HST)

HST have a 90-degree angle and straight grain on the two short sides, which are equal. They are perfect for Sawtooth Squares and Flying Geese.

Quarter Square Triangles (QST)

QST have a 90-degree angle and straight grain on the long side. The two short sides are equal. They are perfect for Hourglass Squares and for designs which have the long side on the outside edge of a quilt block or quilt.

60 degree Equilateral Triangle HALF

The triangles are described by the length of the long side, finished (without seam allowances). Since this triangle is half of an equilateral triangle (section above), the short side is one half of the length of the long side.

TIP  ANY triangle which has a long side twice as long as the shortest side has a 60-degree angle, and fits well with other 60-degree shapes.

CAUTION  Please be careful not to confuse this with the HRT on the Inklingo # 2 CD or in the Storm At Sea downloads, which are named with the length of the two short sides (not the longest and shortest sides). None of them have a 60-degree angle. 

These triangles are listed under a separate heading because they are so useful with 60-degree shapes like hexagons and diamonds.
