Wednesday Tute 05 – Inklingo Pieced Hexagons

Inklingo shapes to print on fabric

FINISHED SIZES

All Inklingo shapes are named with the finished size.

Why? Because it makes everything easier!

When you look at any of the 300 Pieced Hexagons, there are good clues to help you decide the finished sizes of all of the shapes.

In most cases, if you know one measurement, you know them all.

For example, if you know you want to make Pieced Hexagons with 4 inch sides, you learned in Tute 01 that they will be 8 inches across from point to point.

Also, if you know the sides are 4 inches . . .

. . . so. . .  voilà!

With only one measurement, I know the measurements of all of the shapes:  2 inch 60° Diamonds and 2 inch 60° Triangles and Triangle Half.

They are available in 2 shape collections.

(You need 2 shape collections for this size but for all other sizes, the 60° Diamond shape collection also includes the related triangles.)

The Inklingo shape collections show you suggested Custom Page Sizes too.

Print the shapes for one Inklingo Pieced Hexagon

I could print enough for one Pieced Hexagon at a time—6 of each shape.

Print shapes for 2 Inklingo Pieced Hexagons

Or, I could print enough for two blocks at a time with my ordinary Inkjet—12 of each shape.

The COMBO layout for Triangle Half looks after the issue of mirror image, so I don’t have to.

This sample layout uses 60° Triangles 4 inch for the setting and just one of the 300 designs.

It would be even more fun to chose 50 different Pieced Hexagon designs from the 300, don’t you think?

NO FINISHED SIZES?

ALL patterns should tell you the finished size.

Be sure to let to the publisher/magazine/designer know that you consider it unprofessional when a pattern doesn’t tell you finished sizes. I will even help you find contact info, if you need help.

However, while you are waiting for a designer to reply, you can probably be a good detective and uncover the finished sizes by working from one measurement—without any tricky math.

Inklingo Finished Sizes

If the pattern only tells you the “unfinished” (cut) size for the half square triangles, forget the tricky fractions and look at the adjoining shapes.

In this case, if I know that the nine-patch is 6 inches finished, that tells me the finished size of the squares and triangles too.

No more adding and subtracting 7/8 of an inch for Half Square Triangles!

Inklingo gives you confidence that you are using the correct sizes to fit together perfectly.

Simple, eh? We think it is very cool when faster and easier is also best way to do things!

By the way, there are more Triangle Tips under the Machine Piecing tab on the website.

  2. These are beautiful. Thank you. I have persuaded my quilt group that we should be each make ourselves a pieced hexagon quilt in 2014. The wait is to finish current projects but these are SO tempting and irresistable!
