Hourglass Block for EQ Seasons Row-A-Long

EQ Seasons Row Along

Hourglass Quilt Blocks

Hourglass blocks are made with Quarter Square Triangles (QST).

Quarter Square Triangles are a great way to show you how Inklingo makes quilting more accessible—whether you are a beginner or an experienced quilter—so that is why I chose QST for my rows in the EQ7 Seasons Row-A-Long.

You don’t need a separate EQ project file for my rows for the Sew-A-Long because Quarter Square triangles are in the EQ block library!

You don’t have to be able to draw or create something from scratch. EQ makes every step as easy as possible.

How to use Inklingo with Electric Quilt

Electric Quilt is a fabulous tool for designing with Inklingo shapes.

My best tips for using EQ with Inklingo are on the All About Inklingo blog under the EQ tab (above) along with dozens of free EQ project filesDouble Wedding Ring, Patchwork of the Crosses, Yin Yang, and more!

You don’t have to have Electric Quilt to enjoy this project, but it is great if you do!

Print on fabric with your Inkjet and Inklingo

Inklingo is the quilting tool we’ve always wanted, and it makes the row for the EQ7 Seasons Quilt-A-Long a fresh spring breeze! The Inklingo method of printing on fabric is so innovative that it is patented!

Everything about Inklingo’s clever design is intended to make quilting more accessible—including allowing you to use the Inkjet printer and ink you already have! Spend your money on fabric from Northcott (one of the generous sponsors of the Quilt-A-Long) instead of weird rulers, gadgets, and gizmos that only do one thing.

Inklingo is designed to make quilting more fun and allow you to finish any quilt—and you will love the precise results!

Even beginners get perfect QST with Inklingo.

When you print the shapes on fabric with Inklingo:

  • no math
  • no measuring
  • no templates or weird, expensive rulers
  • no drawing lines on the fabric
  • no problem with stretchy bias seams because they are not cut until after the sewing is finished
  • no “trimming up afterward” (a dangerous extra step)
  • no picking off paper

Print on scraps and strips with Inklingo

Math, measuring, drawing lines on the fabric, incorrect straight grain, stretchy bias edges, and extra steps like trimming up and picking off paper can all ruin your results and discourage you from finishing a quilt. Inklingo makes it easy and precise.

Inklingo Quarter Square Triangles are available in many sizes (Index of Shapes) but I used the Diamond Triangle Square shape collection because it is FREE, so you can download it now and start sewing!

Please visit the Main Beginner’s Page to get the free shapes.

Print on fabric with your Inkjet printer and sew!

Print one fabric.
Layer with unprinted fabric.
Sew along the lines.
Cut on the lines with scissors OR a rotary cutter!

Hourglass blocks are cool with Inklingo!

A line to sew along for a perfect scant quarter-inch seam allowance
A line to cut along
Precision corners
Matching marks
Works with scraps and strips to use fabric very efficiently

The same method works for any size and Inklingo shapes are named with the FINISHED size, to make it easy.

The finished size of the QST in the free shape collection is 1.86 inch. That may sound strange–except that it is the PERFECT size for 4.5-inch Stars. The free shapes are very versatile and can be used for dozens of different quilt blocks.

Traditionally, quilters have been limited to easy-to-measure sizes (or templates) but Inklingo makes precision sizes possible without any rounding or fudging. We love odd sizes!

Print shapes on fabric with your Inkjet

For the filler row in the EQ Seasons Row-A-Long, you will insert a fussy cut rectangle (or rectangles) appropriate to the Season, so the row measures exactly 60 inches, finished. You will need up to 30 Hourglass blocks, depending on the size of the rectangle(s).

There are helpful links below.

Print only 2 sheets of fabric for these Hourglass Blocks

For 30 Hourglass blocks, you need 120 triangles (4 x 30). With this method, only one of the two fabrics is printed, so you just need to print half of the triangles (60). Cut 1 sheet of freezer paper 6.75 x 13, and print 32 triangles at a time! FAST.

That means you just need to print 2 sheets of fabric, 6.75 x 13 and each will be layered with another unprinted fabric, 6.75 x 13.

I usually print the lighter fabric, so the lines are easy to see, but you can print on dark fabric with Inklingo too. (Top 10 Tutes)

Quarter square triangles are just one example of how Inklingo makes quilting simpler and more precise.

There are many simple, new techniques possible when you have lines printed on the fabric!

EVERYTHING about Inklingo is designed to make quilting accessible to more people—beginners and experts—whether they hand piece, machine piece, or appliqué and even if they cannot use a rotary cutter.

If you haven’t tried Inklingo yet, the free shapes and the EQ Seasons Row-A-Long are a great way to start!

    • Hi Sandy, You already have the shapes in the free Diamond Triangle Square shape collection and the instructions for sewing Quarter Square Triangles are in the free PDF Triangle Tips under the Machine Piecing Tab on the website. There is also video! If you have any other questions, please ask.

  1. Definitely summer. I love the long days, the warm weather (washing dries quickly) and no school, so I have a clean and tidy house (thanks to my many helpers) and I have more time to sew.

  2. Done!
I just entered the Row-A-Long contest using the “Click to Enter” link next to the Inklingo badge above. Then I saw the dropdown box for the question “What is your favorite season of the year?” where I entered “Fall” so I have a chance at the $20 Inklingo gift certificate too.

That was easy, just like Inklingo! Thanks Linda!

  3. What a fun and clever idea, to insert a rectangle of season themed fabric to finish the row to the perfect width.
Since I am very lazy, I would probably be tempted to insert several strips of fabric between my QST blocks along the entire row! 🙂

  4. Fall is my favorite season. When the air turns crisp, the leaves have mostly turned colors and fallen, and everyone snuggles into their favorite sweaters.

    Thank you for the giveaway.
