COTSIM Mystery Quilt Clue #2

Inklingo Mystery Quilt

Monkey thinks it is mysterious that none of the blocks in Clue #2 are Key West Beauty!

The Key West Beauty shapes are cleverly disguised in this clue. (In other words, these shapes are very versatile. See the free Key West Beauty Electric Quilt project file for examples.)

Inklingo Mystery Quilt

This clue describes how to sew your first block and print more fabric with the Key West Beauty 6 inch shape collection. You can chain sew by machine or hand sew while you watch TV—or a little of both.

We also reveal a secret. You’ll see why printing FIVE identical diamonds for 8-pointed stars can be a good idea for those who are fussy cutting (optional for the diamonds).

  1. Hi Deb,
I am pleased you are enjoying the clues so far. It’s a mystery. You don’t have the instructions to print the rest of the triangles yet, but they are covered in future clues.

  2. Linda,
I finally got back to sewing and I am working on Clue 2 and loving it. However, where did I miss the rest of the HST for the stars. I had printed 1 combo page with 8 triangles and 4 HST on the white or “Salt” fabric, but I have 4 more stars that need them. So I am short 16 of them. What am I missing?
Thanks again for this wonderful mystery and a great way of sewing!

  3. I love stars and have always made them from scratch when quilting. I think yours are the easiest and will always read your blog because it’s so informative.

  4. This is to help others learn from my decaffinated mistakes.

First, when the instructions say to print “Landscape”, you still put the fabric/freezer paper into the printer as “portrait”. So, for the 4″ x 9.25″, put it in with the 4″ across and the 9.25″ down. If your printer is like mine, the 9.25″ is too wide and won’t be able to be fed into the printer. This is the exact reason we tell the printer to rotate the image 90 degrees to fit onto the fabric.

Second, always double check what is being printed by looking into the preview of the current page. Count the number of pieces you’re getting. I ended up going to page 33 instead of 32 and printing an extra 6 hst of white. If I had been paying attention I might have noticed I’m getting 6 triangles and not 4 and fixed it before printing. Here’s hoping I’ll have a use for the extra parts in the future.

  5. I am fairly new at inklingo and quilting in general, but I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for inventing this method and sharing it with such low cost. I especially appreciate this mystery as it will encourage and help me learn how to use this technique better. I wanted to post a picture of my fabric choices and the circling swallows block I made with the free collection, but I’m just now sure how. Just wanted to express my love and gratitude.

  6. Hi Linda,
Now I see why you liked the way I arranged clue #1 on my fabric in my photo!! Honestly, I had no idea where you were headed with clue #2. No, Monkey didn’t whisper anything in my ear! Guess I have my segments all ready to go, though, for clue #2. Know what I will be doing during the Super Bowl!!
    Hugs,
    Betsy

  7. Hi Whiskers!
That is weird. Please forward the email to us, so we can investigate. The three possible places we have checked so far are all correct, so this is an especially mysterious mystery!

  8. Dear Monkey,

    When I click through for “Clue 2” from the newsletter, I go to some strange places. When I click through from the blog, I arrive at my anticipated destination. Just thought you might want to know, so everyone winds up in Key West and not some plumbing shop or wherever. At least, I want to wind up in Key West. ;}
