Carolina Lily Style Blocks with Leaf Sashing

Before I show you some of my quilt designs with the new Leaf Sashing shape collections, I thought it would be fun to show you the beginnings.

How it all started . . .

Inklingo quilters requested Carolina Lily quilt shapes, and Monkey and I always listen to requests!

I loved the idea of using the shapes in the free Diamond/Triangle/Square shape collection for it.

  Working Sketch

I had this sketch on my desk all through the process as inspiration. I could not resist using Rose Dream for the “vase.” Isn’t the mix of points and curves pretty?

The longer I worked on it, the more potential I saw for fabulous flowers with other Inklingo Shape Collections like Dresden Plate and New York Beauty, but it didn’t stop there.

How to make it easy?

I wanted to make it easy to turn any 4.5 or 6 inch block into a flower!

I replaced the inset seams with a gentle, easy-to-sew curve to make it perfect for machine piecers and hand piecers.

Part of the fun is knowing that whatever I design, I can sew—thanks to the cutting and stitching lines printed on the fabric with Inklingo.

How to decide on sizes?

It was easy to see that 4.5 and 6 inch sashing would be a good idea, and would work with LeMoyne Star (either size) and many other blocks.

Also, the free shape collection includes everything for this great flower with 4 diamonds, but the size is odd—3.18 (above).

I wanted to make it a more useful size, and with sashing 1.32 x 3.18, Inklingo lets us turn 3.18 into a very useful and pretty 4.5 inch block. How cool is that? Very!

Don’t you love how they all work together? 3.18 becomes 4.5, becomes 6,  becomes 8.

All of our flower blocks can be set in rows or on-point, because Inklingo has 4.5 and 6 inch On-Point shape collections.

All of today’s examples use flowers you can make with the free Inklingo shape collection (Diamonds, Triangles, Squares) and the new Leaf Sashing, but I had fun creating “vases” with Rose Dream, Log Cabin, and other shapes too.

Double or single sashing? The options keep multiplying!

It’s hard to stop.

I think this gives you some idea of how easy it is to use the new Leaf Sashing to create more than 50 different quilt layouts.

A good thing!

I knew I was onto a good thing with Leaf Sashing because:

  • The flower designs are fabulous.
  • It works with standard size blocks.
  • It is designed to be easy to sew without inset seams.
  • It can be appliquéed or pieced.
  • It is portable by hand—or fast by machine.

I can hardly wait to show you some of my Dresden Plate and New York Beauty flowers and settings. You can subscribe to get an email to be sure you don’t miss anything good (right sidebar).

Who likes flowers?

If you know anyone who likes flower quilt blocks, please let them know what they can do with the free shapes and Leaf Sashing—at a very low intro price for a few days only, okay?

I am very pleased to see the further explanation of how these different sizes will work together. I didn’t “get it” until I saw what you did. Now I know which size will work with what. Super.
