Half Square Triangles—HST for short—are some of the most common and useful patchwork shapes. Two triangles to make a square are components of many quilt blocks, settings, and borders.
With Inklingo, there is no math, no special ruler, no papers to buy, and no papers to remove! You can sew perfect triangles with less work in less time.
In a nutshell!
- Print the desired HST template on one fabric.
- Layer the printed fabric with a second fabric (unprinted), right sides together.
- Stitch along the diagonal dashed lines.
- Cut on ALL of the solid lines with scissors or a rotary cutter.
No special ruler is required! - Press.
To use Inklingo, you just need to know the desired finished size. For the mystery, the triangles are 1.5 inch HST. (Our friend Bonnie always tells us the finished sizes. Thank you, Bonnie!)
No more adding 0.5 inches or 7/8 of an inch.
USING SMALL SCRAPS AND STRIPS
It is easy if you use yardage because you can just print one of the Suggested Custom Page Sizes over and over. Layer with matching unprinted fabric, sew, and cut! Done!
You might have a few more steps when you are using very small scraps and strips, but it is still fast and easy compared to any other method of working with scraps.
It is possible to print on 2-inch strips and tiny scraps (Top Ten Tutes, tab above), but since we only print one of the two fabrics for these Sawtooth Squares, there are some other great options!
If necessary, print the triangles with the largest Suggested Custom Size you can and then cut it into sections or rows that fit with your unprinted scraps and strips before sewing.
It is still easy, still accurate, but you may be printing several different Suggested Custom Page Sizes and need to cut to match your scraps before you sew.
For example, if you have several orange 2-inch strips in your stash, you could print your largest scrap of yellow fabric 8.5 x 11.75 with 32 HST with Layout 2, cut it into 2-inch rows, and layer the printed rows on the unprinted orange strips, right sides together. Sew along the diagonal lines, cut, and press.
Done!
The stretchy bias seams are sewn before they are cut, so nothing stretches out of shape while you sew.
Everything turns out the right size.

Getting ready to make my first print with Inklingo for Clue #3! I had to skip Clue #2 as all my greens still need to finish going through the wash. I figured if I was going to switch over to using Inklingo that I needed to wash all my fabric, only it turned out that I had far more fabric than I thought! After a week and a half I am only half through washing, ironing and trimming my stash! But I can already tell I am going to love Inklingo once I understood how it works. I just wished that I had chosen to do all this before the mystery started! I sat on the fence way too long (since last years’ mystery) and I have to totally redo Clue #1, but this time it will be with Inklingo! Okay, back to work for me!
Hi Shanna, I am delighted to know you are inklingoing Bonnie Hunter’s Celtic Solstice mystery with us. I hope this is the way you will be teaching the charming Miss Z to quilt too. 😉 She will be old enough to love a needle and thread before she starts school and she will love printing on fabric. This is an easy clue, and the PDF one-page guide is so helpful, you can tell at a glance it’s so doable!
What I love about Inklingo is how you always design the shapes so that the straight grain is in the most advantageous positions. Normally, when I just pull scraps from my drawer, I never think about where the grain is, and often my blocks are a little ‘wonky’ when sewed together. Then I wonder why.

I LOVE making HSTs with Inklingo.
How is it that a video from 2009 is already nearly 5 years old? The older I get the more the concept of time shifts into a blur!
Hurrah this step is fairly simple and I love having to only print one of the fabrics.
Hopefully no printer high-jenks this time but I have to do a quick binding for a Christmas gift quilt and make a simple pillowcase first so I can send it on it’s way to NY but that’s OK I think I will be able to get this done pretty quickly anyway.
