Sew 8-pointed Stars! Part 2

Willyne Hammerstein's Midnight Fireworks

Willyne Hammerstein’s Midnight Fireworks is one of the exquisite designs in Millefiori Quilts.

In Part 1, I collected some Fun Facts about 8-pointed stars for Midnight Fireworks.

In Part 2, I’m sharing my best tips for sewing stars BY HAND. Many quilters want to learn how to sew 8-pointed stars by hand because they love a portable project and absolute precision!

Machine piecers sometimes avoid inset seams (not with Inklingo!) but inset seams are an opportunity for “continuous stitching,” so hand piecers love them.

HOW MANY STAR POINTS?

The example in the video shows 6-pointed stars, but the technique is the same for 8-pointed stars.

Some of the other designs in Millefiori Quilts and Millefiori Quilts 2 use 5-pointed stars, 6-pointed stars and even 10-pointed stars! Willyne teaches hand piecing with a running stitch too, not English Paper Piecing, as I originally thought.

These two videos and the basic instructions for sewing AND pressing a LeMoyne Star in the free Diamond Triangle Square shape collection (pages 40-44) will get you started with your stars, but there is more too!

MORE VIDEO?

Quilted Diamonds 2 is back in print and it includes a comprehensive 2-hour hand piecing lesson on DVD. It is like taking a workshop with me, and even better if you are a visual learner because you can watch it over and over again.

(Note: Millefiori Quilts and Quilted Diamonds 2 fit in the flat rate envelope, so you save on postage if you order both at the same time.)

There is also video for Passacaglia on the Main Millefiori Page on the website.

Next time? Part 3 is for 8-pointed stars BY MACHINE!

FACEBOOK VS THE BLOG—ARE YOU SUBSCRIBED?

I post a photo or two almost every day on Facebook.

You do NOT have to have a Facebook account to see what I post there if you go directly to

However, Facebook only shows my photos to about 20% of the quilters who have “liked” the Inklingo Facebook Page, so the best way to stay up to date is to subscribe to the blog (top of right sidebar).

If you are on Facebook, please “like” and “comment” and “share” my photos. It makes it more fun for everyone.

  1. Hi. I asked a question to a blogger about the problem I had with the center of my star. She kindly answer my forwarding this video to me. It was on the exact same day. By myself, I figured out everything I need, but the “circling” step was what I was missing. Thanks to you, my stars are now “almost” perfect. And by the way, thanks for the goodies you sent me along with the Millifiori book I ordered some months ago: I will show them at my guild when I’ll be demonstrated EPP, with and without paper.
