Bonnie Hunter’s Celtic Solstice Mystery – Inklingo Clue 04

Bonnie Hunter's Celtic Solstice Mystery   WELCOME BACK, DETECTIVES!

Inklingo Four-Patches

We’re making four-patches!

Easy peasy! Perfect for the holidays, don’t you think? Thank you, Bonnie!

Inklingo Bonnie Hunter Celtic Solstice Clue 04

Sew 120 or 300 four-patches for Clue # 4!

As usual, Clue # 4 includes a one-page guide to keep you organized at the sewing machine.

It is easy to sew four-patches from 2-inch strips as described in Bonnie’s Clue # 4 without Inklingo.

Why print squares on fabric with Inklingo?

If you rotary cut and machine piece, you probably don’t care about printing squares on fabric with Inklingo! Bonnie’s method is easy for most quilters.

Most quilters will rotary cut 2-inch strips from their scraps, sew two strips together, slice at two-inch intervals, and sew the last seam to get four-patches as described in Bonnie’s Clue # 4.

Easy peasy! It’s done! It’s Christmas!

WHY PRINT SQUARES ON FABRIC?

However, we included 1.5-inch squares in Bonnie’s Celtic Solstice Shape Collection because Bonnie and I know Inklingo includes more quilters.

Including more quilters is great and not just because when you buy Inklingo, Bonnie gets paid and I get paid.  (Thank you!)

Bonnie and I are both passionate about making quilting accessible to everyone—children, beginners, the elderly (all of us someday, I hope), the disabled, anyone on a limited budget, and anyone with limited time to sew.

Without Inklingo, many quilters are excluded.  You probably know some of them. It’s especially hard to make a fabulous Bonnie Hunter design if you don’t rotary cut or machine piece!

We don’t expect you to buy Inklingo just to support Bonnie’s business or mine!  Or just for squares! However, one of these six ideas might be compelling to you, even if you don’t print Inklingo squares for Clue # 4.

Love Actually

REASONS TO LOVE PRINTING ACTUALLY

1. PORTABILITY
Some quilters would like to hand piece this clue while they are traveling over the holidays. If you print the shapes on fabric, it is totally portable.

Even if you don’t travel, you can sew some by hand while you watch Love Actually on DVD with the family and sew some by machine (hybrid) while the rest of the family cleans up the kitchen after your big turkey dinner.

Sew long strips together by machine and sew the last seam by hand. Whatever combination works for you!

Of course, some quilters are hand piecing the whole quilt. Have you seen Cathi Godwin’s Quilt Obsession blog “Chaining by Hand”?

2. SAVE TIME
Some quilters are using yardage and can save time if they print 20 or more squares at a time.

If you are experienced with printing on fabric already, it can be faster than cutting accurate 2-inch strips and eye-balling a scant 0.25-inch seam allowance.

3. NO ROTARY CUTTING
Some quilters cannot rotary cut at all (can’t stand for a long time, carpal tunnel, arthritis, lack of space, poor eyesight) or cannot rotary cut 2-inch strips accurately enough to be happy with the results.

Thanks to our cool Inklingo method, they can cut with scissors and they don’t have to cut every square individually. Print one fabric, layer with unprinted fabric, sew by machine, and then cut on the lines with scissors (spring-loaded, if necessary).

4. SCRAPPY
Some scrappy quilters find it easier and more accurate to print large scraps with squares, cut them apart to fit on itty bitty scraps, sew on the lines, and cut after sewing.

5. ACCURACY (NO MEASURING)
Sometimes squares are hard to rotary cut accurately. Two-inch strips are easy to measure but what about 1.59-inch squares?

Inklingo is perfect when the measurement is difficult for designs like Feathered Star, Storm At Sea, Square in a Square, and many others. The Inklingo Index of Shapes includes 1.59 and 6.36-inch squares, among others.

All Inklingo shapes are named with the finished size. Inklingo makes difficult designs possible for everyone.

6. HOPE FOR THE FUTURE
Even if you don’t print any of the squares for Bonnie’s Celtic Solstice, it may give you hope that you will be able to quilt all your life.

As one quilter says, even though she can rotary cut and machine piece today, rotary cutting is getting more difficult because of arthritis and someday she won’t have as much space for sewing as she does now. She says she will keep on quilting with Inklingo as long as she has a computer and a printer.

Several quilters in their 80s have learned how to print on fabric with Inklingo. Let’s keep on quilting and keep our minds sharp!

You aren’t old until you stop learning.

  1. You know, Linda, I think my favourite reason to Inklingo squares is so I can hand piece in the eves, and be comfy on sofa, rather than sit to Nina. (My sewing machine; Bernina)
Also, I like your phrase, ‘this is a mystery, not a race’!
I take this opportunity to wish you and your family (and Monkey!) every thing good for Christmas. 🙂

  3. With so much going on, I really appreciate the easy four patch. I can’t imagine what our quilts will look like in the end but I’m so excited to find out. My husband just walks by and smiles and our cat Max continues to find a soft spot on my work table to settle down and watch.
Thank You Bonnie and a Merry Christmas and Peaceful New year.

  4. I will probably do the ruler and rotary cutting method this clue but I love that you are thinking of very good reasons for me to continue with Inklingo in the future! LOL
God Bless you, Russ and Monkey too
    Merry Christmas to you all
