Passacaglia—a Baroque musical form

Music was important to Lucy Boston all her life. She interpreted the form of a Passacaglia in fabric. The bass line is the background fabric and the four stars, which are always in the same positions. The melody is the placement of color, which changes from block to block. It was the perfect gift for her friend, Colin Tilney, a brilliant harpsichordist.

Lucy Boston’s Passacaglia is described and illustrated in Diana Boston’s book, The Patchworks of Lucy Boston.

A note about confusing names!

Many quilters have used “passacaglia” to name their quilts!

Passacaglia is a Baroque music form from the 1600s. It was destined to cause confusion for quilters in the twenty-first century.

1. Some quilters mistakenly think La Passacaglia is called Millefiori because it is on the cover of the Millefiori Quilts book.

2. There is also a Millefiore Quilt Along based on a book by Katja Marek, which uses different shapes.

3. The Patchworks of Lucy Boston, a wonderful book by Diana Boston also includes a quilt called Passacaglia.

4. Tilde in Denmark called this table runner pattern Passacaglia in 2009.
